About the currency
Coins and notes
The Vanuatu vatu (VT) doesn’t have any subdivisions – so you’ll have to get used to seeing a lot more zeroes on your notes. Vatu coins include 1VT, 2VT, 5VT, 10VT, 20VT, 50VT and 100VT variations. Banknotes currently in circulation include 200VT, 500VT, 1,000VT, 2,000VT, 5,000VT and 10,000VT.
Facts about the currency
- Vanuatu used to accept the Australian dollar, until the vatu was introduced in 1981.
- Arriving or leaving with VUV 1,000,000 or more? Any amounts over this, or the equivalent in foreign currency, must be declared.
- Because of Vanuatu's French colonial history, their current vatu coins are the same size and colour of the coins of New Hebrides, which are based in part on French units.
- 1VT and 2VT coins are rarely used thanks to inflation, and prices in Vanuatu are rounded up to the nearest 5VT. If you come across a 1VT or 2VT coin, keep it for your collection.
