Paradise or pilgrimage? Saudi Arabia has it all!

The most history-dense region of the world meets the most modern and cutting-edge architecture.

The journey to Saudi Arabia is far more than the average holiday. The pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina is the most sacred journey imaginable for those of the Islamic faith. Visiting the site of Muhammed’s birth is truly an awakening experience, but is only accessible to Muslims. After paradise, not a pilgrimage? There’s still plenty to enjoy about this desert oasis. Explore the ancient rock carving sites in Jubbah and Shuwaymus, the astonishing 850m King’s Fountain water jet, or the site of the world’s tallest building, the unfathomable 1,000m-high Kingdom Tower due for completion in 2020.

This treasure chest of a region is just a chest without the Saudi riyal in your pocket, so swap your New Zealand dollars for riyals today. This currency is only available to purchase in store. Drop into any of our Travel Money NZ stores across New Zealand to pick up your Saudi riyals today.

Coins and notes

Since 1963, the riyal has been divided into 100 halalas. Today’s coins in circulation are worth 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 halalas, and 1 and 2 riyals. Notes range through 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 riyals. And if you arrive back in New Zealand with any riyal left, any Travel Money NZ store can help you trade it back for the classic NZ dollar.

Facts about the currency

  • Anything greater than SAR 60,000 (or the equivalent in other currencies) must be declared on entry to Saudi Arabia.
  • The riyal was introduced at the exact same time as the nation of Saudi Arabia itself.
  • The riyal is always worth 3.75 USD – they’ve been lovingly pegged to each other since 2007.
  • You might see some ‘qrish’ coins still in circulation, but they aren’t commonly used or found anymore.
