About the currency

Coins and notes

It might be one of the wealthiest countries in the world, but you don’t need to be an oil tycoon to have a good time in Qatar. However, you will need some Qatari cash. The riyal is divided into 100 dirhams. In Qatari currency, coins are available in 1c, 5c, 10c, 25c and 50c denominations. Qatari banknotes come in $1, $5, $10, $50, $100 and $500 denominations.

Facts about the currency

  • There are currently no restrictions on bringing QAR or foreign currency into Qatar (except for Israeli currency, which is prohibited).
  • Until 1966, Qatar used the Indian rupee as currency, in the form of Gulf rupees.
  • When India devalued the rupee in 1966, Qatar chose to introduce its own currency.
  • Following Dubai's entrance into the United Arab Emirates, Qatar began issuing the Qatari riyal separate from Dubai in 1973. The old notes continued to circulate in parallel for 90 days before being withdrawn.
