About the currency

Coins and notes

Mauritian rupees are divided into 100 cents (much like dollars), but these are largely unused. You may stumble across coins worth 5 or 20 cents, but you’ll most likely find 0.5, 1, 5, 10 and 20 rupee coins. The notes then rise through 25, 50, 100, 200, 500, 1,000 and 2,000 rupees.

Facts about the currency

  • There’s no limit on carrying any currency in or out of Mauritius. But if you plan to move more than 500,000 rupees or the equivalent, you’ll need to declare it.
  • A 100 rupee coin was released in 2001 to commemorate the centenary anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s visit to Mauritius. So if you see one, look after it!
  • Each current banknote has a hand-engraved portrait of a prominent Mauritian figure on it, making the currency absolutely stunning.
  • To show how small ‘cents’ are in Mauritius, the 1 rupee coin is considered as “supermarket” small-change, so it doesn’t really make ‘cents’ that they’re still in circulation at all.
  • The 2,000 rupee note has a hologram containing images of a dodo and the value “2,000”, surely one of the most stunning banknote security features anywhere in the world.
