About the currency

Coins and notes

Chilean peso coins offer values of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500 pesos a piece.

On the top end of the scale, you’ll find notes worth 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000 and 20,000 pesos each.

How many currencies have standard notes worth 20,000x more than another common piece of currency? Not many.

Facts about the currency

  • The Chileans have a smorgasbord of nicknames for their money – like luca for 1,000 pesos, quina for 500 pesos and gamba for 100 pesos.
  • Not even the locals care much for the 1 peso and 5 peso coins. They’re more likely to be used for decoration than spending.
  • Watch out for the 2008 misprinted 50 peso coins with ‘Chile’ misspelled as ‘Chiie’. They’re now worth quite a bit! If only all our mistakes were as valuable.
  • The pricier banknotes are often nicknamed after the people who appear on them, such as gabriela for Gabriela Mistral on the 5,000 peso note.

The historical rates chart above shows how today’s exchange rate compares to what it's been in the past.
